How Often Should I Cut My Curls?

Curly hair is stunningly gorgeous, but it does require special care to keep it healthy and looking its best. Curly hair actually tends to be more dry and fragile than straight or wavy hair. Every twist and bend along the hair shaft is a stress point and can easily break if not treated gently. And, natural oils and products cannot make their way down a curly hair strand as easily as other textures so it’s harder for those ends to stay healthy and pliable.

The Ideal Haircut Schedule:

One of the most common questions we get asked at Fringe Collective is: How often should I cut my curls? The answer depends on your hair goals, lifestyle, and curl pattern.

For healthy, bouncy curls, we recommend getting a haircut at least every 12 weeks. This prevents split ends, maintains shape, and ensures your curls stay defined and frizz-free. If your curls are tighter or more delicate, you may need a haircut closer to the 8-week mark.

Signs It’s Time for a Cut

Not sure if you’re due for a trim? Look out for these signs:

✔ Frizz and tangling – If your curls tangle easily, it could mean your ends are dry and splitting.

✔ Loss of shape – When your curls start looking weighed down or uneven, a shape refresh can bring them back to life.

✔ Slower styling – If it’s taking longer to style your hair, it may be time to remove damaged ends for easier manageability.

Growing Out Your Curls?

If you’re trying to grow longer curls, don’t skip haircuts ! Cutting your hair regularly prevents breakage, helping your curls grow stronger and healthier. A trim every 12 weeks will help maintain length while keeping your ends fresh.

At Fringe Collective we offer the Signature Curly Haircut which implements specialized haircutting techniques for wavy, curly or coily hair types. Stylists will see how each curl will fall and individually shape according to the client's lifestyle and needs. We recommend this service for clients wishing to work with their wavy, curly or coily texture. Typically, these haircuts need maintenance only every few months. It’s is also of supreme importance to follow your stylist’s home hair care recommendations. We love Oribe Moisture and Control Shampoo, Condtioner and Masque for keeping curls happy and hydrated. Oribe makes a host of amazing styling products like Curl Enhancing mousse, Curl Butter and Curl Gelee which all work in different ways to hold your curls in place without frizz or tackiness.
