Redefining Your Look Post-Quarantine 2020
No doubt 2020 will go down in history as the year of the Collective Pause. As Covid19 wrecks havoc on the entire world, salons everywhere had to close as well all observe social distancing and government imposed stay at home orders. Without the aid of trusted stylists and other beauty pros millions of people are left to navigate the mystifying world of beauty. Haircuts grows long, gray hairs peek out. Highlights slowly move away from the scalp….
As salons everywhere are slowly being allowed to reopen, here are my predictions for post-quarantine 2020:
gray transformations.
Clients who have spent many weeks in quarantine and that have had absolutely enough of monthly gray touch up and/or who spend weeks hating their silver hairs appearing around their hairline are going to opt for gray transformation services. These involve removing all the previous artificial color and allowing the natural gray and white hair to grow in. While these services are very time consuming and involve a great deal of experience from a professional stylist , it allows the client the freedom to no longer be married to frequent salon visits while they embrace their natural gray!!
choppy shag.
I predict that we will see a return of shorter, choppy layers, lots of movement and a shift away from the structure and heaviness of bobs. In part, due to stylists having to correct “quarantine self cuts” but also because of how sassy and easy care these cuts tend to be. Choppy shags work great on most hair types from fine & thin to thick & coarse. Experienced stylists will know how best to create that movement and choppiness while keeping the hair easy for clients to work with at home.
wash n’ go.
Good news for the hair impaired!!! Over the past few weeks, none of us have been styling our hair!!! The “wash n’ go” look is back! Just a few years ago we were all cursing our lack of manual dexterity and patience as we tried to give ourselves salon worthy blowouts. Well not this year! Almost everyone is back on the easy care bandwagon. Manufacturers are making products that are designed to give your hair texture and a little support while it air dries and texture services are being reworked to give clients more support to their natural waves and curls and less frizz and decreased dry time. My favorite texture services are American Wave for adding support and enhancement to waves and curls. And Brazilian Blowout for eliminating frizz for up to 12 weeks while adding shine to the hair.
bronde!!!
Blonde hair has and always will be on trend, but we are seeing a richer, deeper, multidimensional version this year. Partially because no one has had access to their salon in the past few months. Techniques like ombré and color melting will transition to babylights, foilyage and subtle shadow rooting to keep haircolor rich and dimensional.
razor cuts.
I think everyone has missed having a fresh haircut that bounces and swings. A perennial favorite amongst stylists for creating movement and soft lines. A razor offers stylists the ultimate in creative freedom not only to cut but to create as much or as little texture as needed. Heads up - a razor cut should never “hurt” it should always feel like the razor is gently gliding through your hair. Speak up and tell your stylist if it doesn’t!
muted tones.
As a stylist I am THRILLED that the vibrant, vivid tones are making way for more muted tones in 2020. Maybe this was bound to happen since salons were not open for clients to upkeep. Nonetheless, Reds are more auburn than crimson, brunettes are more chocolate and sun tea rather than walnut or espresso. Blonde is still huge - but we’re seeing buttery, beigey melty tones rather than brassy or icey.
disconnected cuts.
Haircuts that don’t traditionally blend continue to be hot! People will be craving edgy and fun after being housebound in 2020. Balance is the key though, even if the haircut itself is not “blended”. Think undercut, and mullet or asymmetrical bob!! Disconnection within a haircut can give some personality and whimsy to a traditional look.
