5 Reasons Why Your Hair Won't Stay Curled

There are 5 main reasons your curl doesn't stick around. Here are some tricks from a stylist to help!

1. TYPE OF IRON

Professional irons tend to conduct heat better, last longer and have temperature control settings. They are also made of tourmaline, platinum  and ceramic materials which fend to be less damaging to hair. Our favorite is the BioIonic long barrel 1 ¼” styling iron because the larger size allows you to work through the hair much more quickly and it only takes a few seconds to beat up. We rarely recommend clients exceed 360-380 degrees when using any curling iron or straightener.

2. SETTING SPRAY

Stylists tend to use and recommend heat activated setting sprays. Why is this a good idea? First off, it's like a heat shield for your hair - to protect fragile strands from having direct heat.  Secondly, it's specially formulated to respond with heat to lock in styles without making them hairspray crusty. Our stylists' go-to is L’ANZA Thermal Defense Spray or L’ANZA Brush Thru Spray. Spray on all of the hair before curling and let cool (do not touch) for the best results.

3. SECTIONING

It's important to make sure you're working with the right amount of hair at a time. Too much and the curl won't hold. Too little and it'll be too curly. Great rule to follow is to take a section a little less than the size of the heated portion of the tool.

4. LET IT COOL

So, there are two ways to do this:

  • If your hair tends to not hold, use small setting clips to hold the hair in place till it's fully cooled or you're ready to go. This cool down process helps set the curl to last even longer.

  • If you're going for a more relaxed style, let the curl cool down in its natural fall, but don’t touch it! Let it be and you will have longer lasting curls with less frizz. Either way - don’t touch until it’s all cool!

5. PRE-PREP

For extra insurance on a long lasting style, try blow drying in a volume product (such as L’ANZA Roots Effects or Hair Plumper) or a mattifying, texture product (like L’ANZA Beach Spray or L’ANZA Dry Texture Spray). This will add extra heat protection, more heat activated curl holding power, and great volume start. This is a must-do step if you have slippery hair that rejects any curl.
