Hair Damage
When it comes to hair breakage and damage, there are 4 main culprits!
Damaged hair is weakened hair that has been changed in some way. Some hair types are more prone to breakage.
Curly hair tends to be more dry and has a unique curvy shape and each bend is a weaker area.
Fine hair strands have a much smaller diameter and can sometimes even be missing its innermost layer, thus making it weaker.
Highlighted hair is more prone to damage because the chemicals used to make it lighter actually remove color molecules during processing leaving it with a different makeup.
The good news is, once you understand the why’s and how’s , damage can be prevented and kept to a minimum.
1. Mechanical damage
This is caused by friction or improper handling. Think aggressive brushing, combing teasing and heat styling and even being too rough when towel drying or removing hair accessories. So how do you prevent this? Handle your hair with care - think of it like it’s your favorite dress or a fine suit. Be gentle when you are detangling and styling. Rethink styles that can cause stress on the surface of the hair like tight ponytails. Air dry hair when possible and lower the heat setting on your curling and flat irons. Also try slowing down the speed on your hair dryer. LANZA Noni Fruit leave in conditioner and LANZA Neem serum are excellent for helping keep mechanical damage to a minimum.
2. Chemical damage
This is caused from overuse/ misuse of hair color, lightening services, perming or chemical straighteners. These services swell your hair’s cuticle layer which makes it more porous which can weaken your strands. The best way to prevent this from happening is leave this part to the professionals! It is always beneficial to hydrate your hair at home with a deep conditioning mask before visiting the salon for your chemical services. And make sure you’re using the products that your stylist recommends at home. We love LANZA Healing Color Shampoo and Conditioner as well as Trauma Treatment for helping prevent chemical damage.
3. Environmental damage
This happens when hair comes from exposure to pollution, UV rays, excessive heat and cold and even hard water. These factors are to blame for frizz, dryness, buildup and dullness. While it's impossible to completely prevent exposure to this, do your best to cover hair when exposed to outside elements. You can clarify your hair to remove build up and keep your moisture up with regular use of treatments and conditioners. We like LANZA Clarifying Shampoo and LANZA Moi Moi mask. Don't forget to drink plenty of water everyday. Products can only do so much if you're not hydrated on the inside.
4. Hormonal damage
This originates from within our bodies and happens with the normal aging process, pregnancy, diet, weight fluctuations and medications. This can lead to slower hair growth, thinning hair loss, changes in texture and gray hair. We can’t always control these factors either and if you have genuine concerns, please consult your doctor. Things that can help are managing your stress, getting enough sleep, and eating a healthy balanced diet. We also recommend LANZA Stimulating Shampoo, Conditioner and Treatment spray as well as the LANZA Thickening regimen for keeping your hair feeling thick and full.
