Working Out with Hair Extensions
MYTH: You can’t work out with extensions.
FACT: Just because you live an active lifestyle doesn’t mean you can’t ever wear extensions! It is quite possible to finish a marathon with a full head of flawless hair. It’s all about taking the proper steps to give your extensions a little extra love before and after you workout.
Rock the high pony or loose braids.
Well hello there, Ariana! Before you hit the gym, take a second to pull your hair up and away from your neck and forehead. Pro Tip: avoid tight ponys or buns for the first few days after installation or maintenance. Too much tension is uncomfortable and can cause damage to natural hair so it’s best to avoid the issue as much as possible. If you want to go the extra mile you can always wear a headband to ensure your hair is protected. Let your sweat act as a natural “salt” spray for your hair. Let it dry before you take your hair down and enjoy the beachy effect it has.
Put a cap on it.
For anyone who prefers laps in the pool, wear a swim cap to prevent extra frizz and tangles in your extensions. Learn more about swimming and participating in other outdoor activities with hair extensions here. (see our blog post about summer hair care tips)
Avoid sunscreen.
Sunscreen is super important for your skin, but you must keep it away from your extensions. Sunscreen can discolor the extension hair (think peachy/pink) and it is often irreversible.
Plan out your routine.
Washing your hair 1-2 x per week is an absolute must! So make sure you have the time planned to do it properly. Remember to always use the sulfate-products recommended by your extension specialist to cleanse and hydrate your hair without stripping it of its natural oils. If you swim laps we recommend using a hair mask or deep conditioner at least once a week to help your extensions recover from chlorine damage.
Don’t sacrifice your physical routine for beautiful hair - or vice versa. Ultimately, hair extensions should make your routine lower maintenance and give you more styling options!
