The Top Things Your Stylist Wants You to Know

With over 25 years of experience behind the chair, there isn't much that I haven't seen or heard. Here are the top things your stylist wants you to know:

#1: I can tell you trimmed your own bangs, and I'm not mad about it.

Not even a little bit. I get it, our hair can be uncooperative and have a mind of its own at times. Sometimes it seems to grow faster than others. Maybe I didn't cut enough off at your last appointment. Maybe it's midnight and you got into the margaritas or maybe you had to wait longer between haircuts than you intended. Whatever the reason, I'm not mad, you don't need to apologize (you definitely don't have to pretend that I can't see it). Just know that I always offer complimentary bang trims between appointments to my clients (as do countless other stylists) and if you remind me, I will show you a trick to trim your bangs at home that is super cool and easy.

#2: I don't care if your hair hasn't been washed in a few days.

I pinkie promise that I don't care about this one. You really don’t have to go to the trouble of washing your hair for me on the day of your appointment. I look forward to seeing your hair the way that it looks for you when you’re not in the salon so that I can use and recommend products that are going to work. Not to mention, I really enjoy giving you a relaxing shampoo and feeling your stress melt away under my fingertips! Also important to note, if we are doing a color service at your appointment it may actually be more comfortable on your scalp if you don’t wash it 24 hours beforehand.

#3: Make sure you schedule your appointment for a time you aren’t rushed and can totally relax.

Life is so super busy for all of us and I know how precious every minute of every day is, but do us both a favor and schedule your appointment for a time you can relax and enjoy it. It makes me nervous when you have serious time constraints and it also can interfere with my scheduling of other clients. It also sucks to do a gorgeous color service and not get a chance to see the true results because your client wanted to leave with wet hair. My main goal as a stylist is to make you feel amazing inside and out and sometimes that takes a little time. Take that time for yourself and relax and enjoy the process.

#4: There is NO such thing as 3 layers.

I will humor you when you get in my chair and ask for 1 or 2 or 3 layers but just know that there really is no such thing. The very nature of layers means that the hair is held out at an angle and cut to a desired length. In that process all of the hair on your head gets cut. I won’t bore you with a terminology or geometry lesson because I do believe that as a stylist it is my job to dive a little deeper when we are doing our consultation to see what exactly it is that you're hoping for. Which brings me to my next one….

#5: Keep an open mind.

As a stylist I can tell you that there’s nothing more frustrating than when a client says they want a change, you can do whatever you want, they trust you but they don’t want to lose any length, get any layers/color/bangs/texture and they’re not going to use product at home because they just wash and air dry…..oh and they only get a haircut once a year. If you’re asking your stylist for a change be open minded to their suggestions. That may mean that your daily routine has to change a little or your time between appointments is shorter. Whatever it may be, be honest with yourself and with your stylist but also remember that you’ll never get a different result if you keep doing the same thing.

#6: My recommendations come from a place of love.

Truly know that what I recommend to you be it a new service or a product, it comes from a place of love. I believe that I speak for most stylists when I say that I try really hard to source only the best products to sell and use on you. When I suggest a brow tint or a more moisturizing conditioner it’s because I was listening to you and want you to be happy with the way that you look and to have your day run smoother because you’re not fighting to achieve your desired look.

#7: The integrity of your hair and your health is of utmost importance to me.

Everything that I do or so or recommend is always always always keeping the integrity of your hair and your health and safety in mind. Chemistry and technology have advanced dramatically in the last few years and now more than ever there are products and services that can give you the hair of your dreams. That being said, I will never knowingly compromise your hair or put your health at risk by performing a service or recommending a product that isn’t safe.

#8: Book your next appointment before you leave!

This is crucial!!! I always offer clients the opportunity to get their next appointment on the book before they leave. No one wants their gray hairs showing or their extensions dragging to their knees! The way to ensure you get the time and date that is most convenient is to plan ahead and in fact while you’re at it, plan 2 -3 of your next appointments ahead. It is so hard for me to fit clients at the last minute and that is stressful for both of us. Like I mentioned above, I want you to feel relaxed and pampered while you’re in my chair and not frantic and rushed.
